Reversing wild rice declines in Nett
Lake: a first step in the restoration process
Measured wild rice production between 1996 and 2002 showed consistent,
statistically significant declines in kernel yield.
Production declined from historic highs of +1 million pounds/year to
less than 400,000 pounds/year in 2002.
One major reason for decline is loss of growing environment to invasive
plant species.
Invasive plants also clog inlets and assist in creating stagnant water
conditions, which is deterimental to wild rice growth.
Over 3000 acres of Nett lake surface are is presently impacted through
invasive plant growth.
Invasive plant removal and substrate cultivation opens up opportunity
space for wild rice seed to colonize and germinate.
