Mallard Bay after Weed Removal in 2003
15 acres of substrate surface in
Mallard Bay was cleared of emergent vegetation in 2003. No wild rice
plants were evident in this portion of the bay at the time of clearing.
Barge use for clearing purposes also produces a residual, cultivating
effect to the lake bottom soils.
One growing season later, a dense
stand of wild rice re-colonized the portion of Mallard Bay previously
cleared of plant overgrowth. No artificial seeding of the site was
necessary. Regeneration was by existing wild rice seed, present in the
bottom substrate.
